KNOW YOURSELF 2
1 Peter 2:9-10
A story is told of a baby eagle that was raised amongst chicks. They grow up together, they sleep together, eat together, play together and hide from menacing hawks together. Years have passed and the chicks have grown to be chickens while the baby eagle grew to be an eagle. Still the eagle thought himself a chicken because he dwelt amongst chickens.
They will always gather and admire the flights of the eagle wishing they could fly. One day however a wise owl told the now grown eagle his real identity as an Eagle, all he had to do was spread out his wings and he will fly just like the birds they’ve always admired above. One day he saw an eagle flying above. He looked at the eagle and then looked at himself.
Something in him told him, I’m like this flying eagle! He spread his wings and before you can say Jack Robinson, he was up there flying and soaring. He could not fly before because he thought himself a chicken! He did not know himself.
The matter of identity is borne out of deep knowledge of oneself. It’s about proving yourself to yourself. This is more than what people perceive you to be, it is about WHAT YOU KNOW YOU ARE. Your identity is your DNA. Just like the Eagle, despite spending his entire life amidst chickens to the point that even the chickens perceived him to be one of them, he had the DNA of an Eagle.
No matter what your surroundings suggest, when it comes to soaring, your DNA has the final say. The question now is what DNA do you carry? God can’t be your source and you will carry a DNA that’s less than that of a world domineerer.
The Law of identity is about one of the most powerful laws in the universe. Once you’re convinced of who you truly are, there is no force powerful enough to stop you. Knowing who you are is important in your journey of destiny. “Who you are” is all encompassing; it talks about your personality, your character, your worth etc. Do you really know yourself? Ask yourself questions on issues listed above. When you answer yourself honestly, you are on your way to knowing who you are.
Another important thing about identity is you have to be yourself. Stop trying to be someone else. You are only original, when you are yourself. Trying to be like someone else will only make you a poor copy. And this is not God’s plan for you. He made you an original of yourself and none else. Being yourself means liking you; living life as you should (under God); not governed by someone’s definition of who you are. Respect yourself. Work on your strengths to improve them and on your weaknesses to reduce and limit their impact on your life.
Finally, we talk about your identity in Christ. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold all things are become new” 2 Corinthians 5:10. This quotation defines who you are. When you come to Christ at repentance and salvation, your old self gives way to the new you under the guidance of the Holy Spirit who is now resident in you. He will guide, instruct and teach you. If you yield to him, very soon, a new and better you will emerge that will even surprise you yourself. In character, holiness, boldness, health etc., you come and new.
As Peter puts it, you become partakers of the divine nature. You become immune to things that trouble the adamic nature. This is the divine you- who you are. What troubles the world should not trouble you. This is your identity. Once you know this, the devil is handicapped concerning you or your case. You become a winner and your world stands up in respect for you. come on, get up and enter into the realization of who you are in Christ Jesus.
MEDITATION: I am what God says I am.
