DON’T BE A FOOL 2
MATHEW 25: 1-13
Today’s text is not unfamiliar to you. Even non-Christians are aware of the parable of the ten virgins. Among them, five were fools and five wise. Why were they thus classified? At least all of them were virgins, So it can be said that they were all believers. It is therefore ascertained that believers can either be fools or be wise. So what made some foolish and the others wise?
It was said that ten of them were expecting the bridegroom. And the bridegroom did not come on time and all dozed off until the midnight cry. By the time the groom came, five had not enough oil in their lamps and they could not make the wedding. The five who missed it were classified as fools. Now let us examine them. Firstly, that they were virgins was not in contention. So they were believers. They were expecting the Groom. They did not bring enough oil. This shows lack of preparedness.
A lot of believers today live like these virgins: They are not prepared for the coming of the Lord. In fact they are not prepared for anything. They have a laissez – faire attitude to life. When we are born again, our spirit is renewed. But that does not take away our intellect. God configured us to be able to reason things out and take certain actions by ourselves. The new birth is not tantamount to stupidity. It is reasonable to be prepared for any eventuality. A newly married couple should know that in the next few months at least one baby would arrive and come with a load of needs. Knowing this, the couple should make preparations to meet those needs. Why would your child meet you un-prepared for his coming despite a nine-month notice?
A believer must plan. The five ladies in our text were termed foolish. No adequate preparation. No plans. This shows lack of seriousness. If this is your life, you are a fool. You need to sit up and face the fact that life is serious business and must be handled as such. Be prepared. Make plans. Remember that failure to plan is planning to fail irrespective of whatever endeavour you are involved. Your life deserves Order and Decency. Be prepared for heaven as well as for other issues of life. Don’t be a fool accepting qui-sera-sera. Whatever will happen to your life will have to be made happen by you.
PRAYER: Lord help me to be a wise disciple.
