DON’T BE A FOOL 7
2 Timothy 2:20-26
This will be our final treatise on the matter of fools. So far, we have identified the fool in various ways. Among other flaws of character, the fool says there is no God; he is not rooted in the Word of God (thereby easily swayed by every wind of doctrine); lets anger dominate his life and not serious minded. He lives life lackadaisically not preparing for his future. Today we are rounding up with Paul’s admonition to Timothy:
But foolish and unleaned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle to all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth. (2 Timothy 2:23).
In essence, the admonition to Timothy is to avoid strives as much as can. Rather than enter into unnecessary quarrels, he should put on humility and gentleness of character. If you take time to study strives, fights and divisions among brethren, family members, friends and even the church of God, you will discover that, more often than not, it is from foolish arguments where each party insists on being right. None will be ready to admit wrong, apologise and move on with life. Proverbs 12:15 states: “the way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise”. Please know that strive has its consequences which may not be glaring at the onset of the argument. A lot of relationships had been shipwrecked on foolish arguments. Which one is better? To win an argument and lose a friend or lose an argument and gain a friend?
Let us be wise in handling matters. Many homes are in disarray today because of foolish quarrels. Before you misunderstand this matter, we are not saying you should become a yes-man and “take shit” at all times. No. All we are saying is apply godly wisdom. Be sensitive to issues. Don’t be quarrelsome at every given opportunity. Some people are known for quarrelling and causing divisions in chuch. They nicknamed Division Commanders! Why must your name be mentioned in all matters of strive in the church and your neighborhood. This is foolishness. There are better things to do with life than fighting every day. Be wise. Don’t be a fool.
MEDITATION: Go not forth hastily to strive, lest thou know what to do in the end thereof, when thy neighbor hath put thee to shame. Proverbs 25:8
