WHAT IS YOUR DESIRE?

Mark 10: 35-40

Desire can be defined as a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen.  It is to thirst, hunger or yearn for a particular thing with great passion.  Such is the strength of the emotion of desire that many will sacrifice money and other things in order to achieve what they desire. You may be aware of an English King who abdicated the throne in order to marry the woman he desired to have as wife but whom the nation was against.  Because of his desire, he relinquished his rights and that of his descendants to the throne of England forever.

Desire is a strong emotion. It has led many to greatness and it has led many to perdition depending on the object of focus.  In our text today, two brothers came to Jesus with a request based on desire:

And James and John, the son of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou should do for us whatsoever we shall desire.  And he said unto them, what would ye that I should do for you?  Mark 10:35-36

They came to Jesus and he gave them an open check.  “What do you want me do for you? He asked them.  Now if this were to be you, meeting Jesus face to face and he asks you to make any request, what would your answer be?  Will you request for houses, riches, promotion, landed property, wife, husband, children etc?  Your request will be dictated by your desire, fueled by your innermost passion.  These two brothers chose to ask about life eternal.  They have walked with Jesus for a while.  They have seen miracles of healing and abundance.  They have witnessed economic transforming wonders in Jesus ministry. They could have asked for anything on earth. Yet they asked for seats in the kingdom.

The two brothers preferred things eternal to earthly inheritance.  This is it. Everything you have on earth will remain here and perish here. The only thing that will be your gain is eternal life.  Choose this above riches, position and earthly possession. Incidentally, when you pursue the kingdom, earthily things are added to you.  Jesus said it himself in Mathew 6:31-33. Desire the good point.  Pursue it and it shall be well with you.

PRAYER:  Ask God for help to desire the good part and the grace to pursue and attain it.
