EL ELYON

Genesis 14:18-22

The best way to determine the meaning of God’s compound name is to go to the place it first appeared, for example, El Elyon, “most high God” Gen. 14:18-22. In this passage of five verses, the name El Elyon appears four times as “most high God”. We can learn practical lessons for today by what “the most high God” taught Abraham. First, we should only desire what comes from the hand of God. He provides our needs as we walk by faith. Secondly, we should not look for our needs or wants to come by our own wit, manipulation or promises from the world in return for our compromise with God. Thirdly, and most importantly, only our Jehovah God is the Most High, who possesses all; therefore, He can meet all our material and spiritual needs. He wants us to wait upon Him and trust Him for the timing of those wants or needs to be met.

Satan in Isa.14:13-14 expressed His ambition to become like the “most high God”, but be rest assured neither he nor anyone else will be like the “most high God” (Psa. 47:2-4; 91:9-12). There is no sovereign higher than Jehovah for He subdues all men and nations under His authority. Therefore He can bring deliverance to those who put their trust in Him, for He alone is the Most High God.

El Elyon should be praised for His strength. We need to praise Him over and over again for His strength. Knowing and believing that God is my El Elyon, the strong God; then my enemies, my difficulties, my trials and tribulations, my troubles of any kind will not seem so great. We need to fight the temptation of the “King of Sodom” who was self-reliant and the impression that our resources are from within us.

Since He is El Elyon, the most High God who possesses the heavens and the earth, then He has the right to be worshipped by us, in the way He has revealed to be worshipped, and He alone can provide the way for sinful man to have access to Him. El Elyon demands to be worshipped as the Most High God. He also demands that we tell others about Him in contrast to the many false Gods that men worship.
