JEHOVAH-SHALOM
Judges. 6:16-24
The word shalom is most often and most appropriately translated “peace” some 170 times in the Bible. This word expresses the deepest desire of the human heart. It expresses the greatest measure of contentment and satisfaction in life. One of the greatest names of the Messiah was to be the “Prince of Peace” Isa.9:6 and Jerusalem means “City of peace”.
Jehovah is the source of all peace. And this peace is ours if we will listen to His voice. “The LORD will bless His people with peace.” Psa. 29:11; “The Lord bless you and keep you, the LORD make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.” Num. 6:24-26.
It is in the New Testament that Jehovah-Shalom is fully realised. The attribute of peace is frequently applied to God as the “God of peace”. Rom. 15:33; 2 Cor.13:11; Heb. 13:20. It is also applied to the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ embodies peace and speaks of “My peace” Jn. 14:27. He speaks of Himself as the Giver of peace Jn. 16:33. He is the Prince of Peace promised in the Old Testament Isa. 9:6. When He was born, a host of Angels announced “on earth peace…” Luk. 2:14. Jesus came and preached peace Eph. 2:17. He healed and comforted by saying “Go in peace”. Through His death, and shedding of His blood He paid the price so that we can be reconciled to God and have peace. Rom. 5:1; 2 Cor. 5:19; Col. 1:20.
However, our measure of peace is based on our measure of trust in and obedience to Jehovah Phil. 4:6-9. Are you prone to worry and restlessness, trust in God and have peace. Col. 3:15 tells us to let the peace of God rule in our hearts. And let us not be like the children of Israel who were materialistic and fell into the temptations of the nations around them, but let us be spiritually minded and have peace Rom. 8:6.
The old saying, ” Know Jesus – Know Peace; No Jesus – No Peace” is still true and will always be true.
Prayer: O Lord, let your peace that pass all understanding flood my heart and every area of my life in Jesus name.
