LOVE
1 Corinthians 13
Love is a universal language that cuts across races, languages, tribes and colours yet the most misunderstood word. Love means different things to different people. To some, it may mean infatuation, physical attraction, lust, or a desire to possess and control another. They may mean feelings of excitement, euphoria and irrationality or desire for indulgence in a habit. When a person says, “I love you” to another in the heat of an intimate moments, and the other responds, “I love you too”, there’s a good possibility that they do not have the same intention. People fall in and out of love. In a moment, someone professes love to another and in another moment, that love no longer exists.
True love as God defines it is that love that makes life fulfilling. It connects us to others unconditionally without bias and gives meaning to our lives. It is loving the seemingly “unlovable”, motivating you to do those things, which ordinarily you would not be obligated to do for that person that has hurt you. This is because unconditionally, love accepts other people as they are and not as they should be or based on what they have done. It is not dependent on age or stature, good looks or behaviour, success or wealth. It is exemplified in the love of the father for the wayward son in the parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32).
Contrary to what many believe, there is more to love than emotions or feelings. According to 1 John 4:8, God is love: He who does not love does not know God, for God is love”. It is the characteristic of his nature. This He exemplified in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. The Bible provides the perfect definition of God’s love so much that it should not be misunderstood. It is living selflessly. Does your life exemplify God’s nature – LOVE? If not, then you do not know God. Love should be your life perspective and motivation and the way you view the world around you.
PRAYER: May the love of God be shed abroad in my heart
