ABRAHAM: THE TITHER

Genesis 14: 18-20

When Abraham gave a tenth of his possessions to Melchizedek, the priest of God, he became the first person recorded to have paid tithe in the bible. He did so before either the Old or New Testament came into force.

Ten percent of one’s possession is considerable and no one would give that away without a measure of seriousness. It is safe to conclude therefore that there must be some good in tithing recognizable to Abraham which prompted his action.

The practice of paying tithe is widely accepted and encouraged by the church worldwide. It is a recognized means of funding God’s work in various denominations, a reasonable model for sharing the financial responsibilities arising in the church among God’s people. Tithing is therefore an expression of commitment by a believer. Where do you stand? Are you committed or a mere onlooker?

God proclaimed a blessing on tithing which every believer should desire and want to deliberately provoke upon his or her life.

MEDITATION: Malachi 3:10-11: “ Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house, and try  me now in this, says the Lord of Hosts, If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessings that there will be no room for more to receive it. And I will rebuke devourers for your sake, so that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field says the Lord of hosts”
