ADDRESSING HIDDEN SIN AND SEEKING GOD’S FAVOUR
Joshua 7:1-13
Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions.” – Joshua 7:11
Israel faces unexpected defeat at Ai after their victory over Jericho. When Joshua seeks God’s guidance, he learns that hidden sin within the camp is the cause of their failure. Achan had taken items set apart for God, affecting the entire nation. This story reminds us of the weight of sin, the importance of integrity, and the need for repentance to restore our relationship with God.
The defeat at Ai shows that even hidden sin can impact others around us. Sin is rarely private—it affects our spiritual health and relationships. Just as Israel’s strength was compromised by Achan’s actions, our lives are weakened when we harbor sin. Is there anything in your life that needs to be confessed and brought to God?
God gave clear instructions about the items devoted to Him, yet Achan disregarded them. His disobedience reminds us of the importance of living with integrity and staying true to God’s word. God calls us to a wholehearted commitment to His ways. Are there areas where you need to realign with God’s truth and renew your commitment to integrity?
When Achan’s sin was exposed, Israel was called to repentance, and God’s favor was restored. God doesn’t leave us when we fall short; instead, He invites us to confess, seek forgiveness, and be renewed. Repentance allows us to move forward, strengthened in our relationship with Him. Where do you need to turn to God for forgiveness and begin anew?
Achan’s actions showed a desire to rely on material gain rather than on God. His story warns us to resist placing our security in earthly things, remembering that God alone is our source of provision and blessing. When tempted to find security elsewhere, we’re reminded to trust in God’s faithful provision. Where might you need to release reliance on worldly “treasures” and refocus on God?
Are you willing to let God search your heart and reveal areas in need of cleansing? What steps can you take to be more honest before God and others? Trust that through repentance, God restores and renews us, drawing us back into His favour.
PRAYER: “Lord, help me to walk in integrity, bring any hidden sin into the light, and seek Your forgiveness. Restore me to Your favor, and keep my heart fully devoted to You. Amen.”
