IF MEN CAN
Mathew 7:7-11
The text today is a great assurance that God answers prayers. It was a direct statement from the lord Jesus himself. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”. What beautiful promise! If one would hold on to this word, it is like a blank checque given to the believer to approach Heaven’s Bank. You can ask anything and it shall be given you. Whatever you seek shall be found by you and if you knock on any door, it shall be opened for you. Beyond the issue of asking and receiving here, these verses reveal something about the personality of God.
If ye then being evil, know low to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
Jesus specifically states here that God is our Father in heaven. Unlike man, he is not evil. Men are basically evil. Yet they still show love to their children. They give good gifts to their sons and daughters. If man can do that, God can do much more. No parent would plan and will for his children to go through life poverty stricken, sick, downtrodden, downcast, down and out living like the dregs of the world. No right thinking parent will do that. Every good parent wants the best for his/her children. And yet they are “evil”. We all work hard to make life better for our children. We want them to excel more than we did. We don’t want them to suffer the deprivations we encountered in our growing up. We want them to have a smoother, better and more beautiful deal.
Men do these because they love their children. And the bible calls them “evil”. But God’s love is superior. We are his children and he loves us more than any earthly parent can do. If natural men know how to give good gifts to their children, how much more will our loving Heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him! An understanding of the nature of God from this verse will energize our prayer life. Note this points:
- God is your Father
- God loves you.
- God gives good gifts
- God is willing to give you good gifts
- You only need to ask.
- There is no limit to your asking and receiving.
Beloved, you have a loving father who is willing to give you good things”. You should not be on the list of “have nots”. Check in with Dad on a daily basis and good things shall be yours.
TO DO: Ask what you will from your loving Father.
