KNOW YOURSELF
Matthew 4:3-4
The issue of identity is one of the greatest challenges facing man. It was the crux of the matter in the garden of Eden. In everything, man was god. He carried the image. The breath of God was in his nostrils. Until Satan came, man’s only conversation was with God. God would come in the cool of the day and have fellowship with man. But when the devil came in, he attacked the issue of identity.
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3:4-5
Adam and Eve had the identity of God and were not aware of it. That is why the devil could confuse them. He said “ye shall be as gods”. All Eve needed was to answer him “I am already a god” and that would have settled the matter, it was the same issue in the temptation of Jesus Christ.
And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:3-4
Thefirst temptation was that of identity! “If thou be the son of God……”. Unfortunately for Satan, Jesus knew who he was. He did not need the tempter to affirm him. He did not need to prove himself either.
Beloved, knowing who you are is very important in life and destiny. When the question is asked. “who are you?” What comes into your mind? Is it just your name, the position you occupy and probably what you do for a living? Your identity goes beyond your name. Remember, your name was given you by others even before your personality was formed. You may even change your name, yet you still remain the same you. Hence we must address this issue of identity.
MEDITATION: who am I?
