LOVE IS NOT SELF SEEKING

1 Corinthians 13:5

As already established, love is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith. To understand love and how we ought to live as Christians, we are taking time to examine the characteristics of love as described by Paul in 1 Corinthians 13.  Today, we’ll look at the aspect of love that “is not self-seeking.”

Self-seeking refers to the pursuit of one’s own interests, needs, and desires above those of others. It involves prioritizing oneself over others, often at the expense of their well-being. Selflessness involves putting the needs and interests of others before one’s own. It requires a willingness to sacrifice and prioritize the well-being of others.

To manifest love in acts of selflessness, we must learn to put others first. Love prioritizes the needs and interests of others (Phillippians 2:3-4). Give sacrificially, without expecting anything in return (John 3:16) and seeking the good of others. Love seeks the good and well-being of others, even if it requires personal sacrifice (1 Corinthians 10:24). Serve others. Look for opportunities to serve others, putting their needs before your own. As followers of Christ, we’re called to demonstrate this kind of selfless love towards others. May we seek to prioritize the needs of others, sacrificing our own interests and desires when necessary. This is how to walk in the footsteps of Jesus. This is love in action.

PRAYER: Help us, Lord, to love others selflessly, putting their needs and interests before our own. May we seek to prioritize the well-being of others, sacrificing our own desires and interests when necessary.
