PREPARE FOR THE RAINY DAY
Genesis 41: 34-36
Life is like a journey. The road has its fair share of twists and turns; potholes; sharp bends; hills and valleys. When the going is good and the journey is smooth, you must prepare yourself for the other side of life. There may come a time when what is plenty today may become scarce. You must understand that one of the reasons for today’s abundance is to enable you put something by for tomorrow’s scarcity!
Christians should not live their lives without planning for tomorrow. Joseph’s wisdom here is very instructive. He counseled that twenty percent of today’s harvest be set aside and preserved for the days of famine. This is wise. Imagine yourself putting twenty percent of your income in savings for future use! After a while, you invest the savings and you still keep on putting aside the same twenty percent of the yield. If you do this for a while, you shall soon find yourself in financial abundance.
Now what does the “days of famine” represent? It means a time when your needs may outweigh your income. It means a time you may not be able to run around as you do today. It represents a time when you suddenly need to spend more than your regular expenses. As a young couple, today, you only have just two of you to cope with. But gradually, children would arrive, grow and come with needs that may not be in tandem with your regular income. Dear single brother or sister, your wedding day is ahead. You must therefore prepare.
What are we saying? You are a Christian and should prepare for tomorrow. How long can you survive if there is a disruption to your inflow? We all remember the 2020 lockdown! Everybody was mostly indoors. Nobody could go to work. Many incomes were at a standstill. Many people went borrowing and begging. Even Christians were not spared. This should not be. It ought not to be so if we have prepared for the raining day.
Learn from the proverbial ant (Proverbs 6: 6-8) it knows that it could not go out during winter or rainy season. So it stores her food in the dry season. During the cold and wet season, it stays at home and lives comfortably on what was put by in the summer. Beloved, you are in the summer of life now, the winter ahead is cold but if you can prepare ahead, you shall stay warm. Stop eating with ten fingers.
