SEEK GOD’S WISDOM AND EMBRACE INTEGRITY
Joshua 9:1-14
“The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.” — Joshua 9:14
In Joshua 9, we encounter the story of the Gibeonites, who trick Israel into making a peace treaty. Israel had just experienced major victories at Jericho and Ai, and news of these conquests spread quickly. Fearing for their survival, the Gibeonites, a nearby nation, disguised themselves as travelers from a distant land. They wore worn-out clothes and carried stale bread to appear as if they had traveled far, hoping to deceive Israel into a peace agreement. Joshua and the leaders took the bait—they examined the evidence before them but failed to seek God’s wisdom. They agreed to a treaty, only to discover later that they had been deceived.
Always Seek God’s Wisdom First: In verse 14, we see that Israel “did not inquire of the Lord.” They relied on their own assessment of the situation rather than turning to God for guidance. How often do we, like Israel, make decisions based on what we see or think we understand, rather than pausing to seek God’s wisdom? When faced with decisions, whether big or small, develop the habit of seeking God first. Pray, read Scripture, and ask for His guidance. God’s wisdom can guard us against deception and help us avoid costly mistakes.
Don’t Be Deceived by Outward Appearances: The Gibeonites appeared to be poor, weary travelers, but their appearance was meant to deceive. In life, situations or people may appear one way but have hidden motives. Without God’s insight, we can be led astray. Ask God to give you discernment to look beyond what is visible. He alone knows the truth of each situation and the motives of every heart.
Honoring Our Commitments with Integrity: Even though Israel had been tricked, they honored the covenant they made with the Gibeonites. They realized that their word held weight before God and chose to uphold their agreement, despite the deception involved. God values integrity, and honoring our commitments reflects His character. Let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no.” Whether in marriage, friendships, work, or faith, follow through on your commitments. Integrity honors God and shows respect for others.
God’s Grace Covers Our Mistakes: Though Israel erred by not consulting God, He continued to work through the situation. Despite their mistake, God integrated the Gibeonites into Israel’s story, even making them servants for the tabernacle. God is sovereign and gracious, often redeeming our mistakes and using them for His purposes. Remember that God’s grace is greater than our mistakes. When we fall short or make a wrong choice, we can repent, turn back to Him, and trust that He can still bring good out of it.
PRAYER: LORD, help me to rely on you wholy for the decisions of my life. I choose not to travel alone but with you as my Guide.
