THE LAW OF MANAGEMENT 1

Deuteronomy 28:1-5

Most times, we talk only about time management. We must, however, realise that Time Management is synonymous with life management. A person that is not a good manager of his/her life will never value time.  Life management for a Christian means a life that is run by God.  It means that such a person is dependent on the Spirit of God and the word of God. A life of total obedience. This is the difference that we see in the lives of King Saul and David.

Traditionally in Israel, the human king of Israel was a servant of the invisible God of Israel. The kingdom was ruled by the King of kings with the human king as the representative of the King of kings. The human king is appointed by God and he is expected to listen to God, pray to him and obey him in line with Romans 8:14: “Those who are led by the Spirit are sons of God.”  Saul’s life was not regulated or managed by God. He was a self-centred man who lived for his own glory and consistently refused to follow God’s instructions. He always had excuses for disobeying God. The Bible made us to understand that Saul was rejected because he rejected God’s order.

David on the other hand, lived a life that was dependent on God. He was sold out to God. He never assumed the move of God that if God had done it like this in the past, he will move in the same way. He always inquired of the Lord what he needed to do. When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold. When the Philistines camped in the Valley of Rephaim; David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me? The LORD answered him, “Go, for I will surely hand the Philistines over to you.”  David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the LORD has broken out against my enemies before me.” So that place was called Baal Perazim. When the Philistines again came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; David inquired of the LORD, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle round behind them and attack them in front of the balsam trees. As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, move quickly, because that will mean the LORD has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David did as the LORD commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer (2 Kings 5:17-25). David did not play familiarity with God. He was not a perfect man. He sinned time and time again. But yet God called him a man after his heart because he knew how to follow after God.

MEDITATION: My time is my life. Wasting time is wasting life.
