THE LAW OF TRANSITION
Ecclesiastes 3:1-6
Life is about times and seasons. There are seasons for everything under the sun. There is the infant season, toddler season, childhood season, Adolescent season, adulthood and old age. And then we have the season of death. Moving from one season to another is called transition. Managing your seasons and transition is essential to your well- being and success in life and destiny. It is the same with business, schooling etc.
There are laws governing transition. The first one is that of knowing your
size per time. One respected man of God said “Life is in phases and men are in sizes”. If you know your phase per time and you are in tune with your size, you will know how to manage every phase well. Know where you are per time and live it right. You just started a business, you can’t expect it to yield all the profit in a season. You can’t expect to ride the kind of cars bigger entrepreneurs drive. Live your size per time or you will crash and not be able to transit to the next level.
The second law is that of stock taking. Take stock constantly to know where you are per time. How has the business fared over a period of time? Are there mistakes to be corrected? What can be done better? Have I applied the principles of cost – benefit analysis? What about effectiveness and efficiency? Did I really put in my best? Do I need to cut costs here and put in more there!
Thirdly, you need to minimize gratifications. Don’t take what you will be due for in a higher level while you are still lower. It kills business ventures. I learnt of a state that set up an investment business venture like the one in Lagos (IBILE). In their own wisdom, with the little capital the state gave them, the management went ahead to award themselves remunerations akin to that of IBILE in Lagos: same cars, salary and other perquisites of office. Without further capital from the state, the outfit collapsed in a few months. Can you imagine? The MD of a new company with N500m start-up capital wanting to earn as much as a much older company with billions of Naira capitals and years of experience!
Lastly, be a visionary. You may be small today, but you are going to grow. Work at your vision. You can’t get there overnight. But you must not give up. Don’t deviate though you might have to make adjustments here and there from time to time. Prepare yourself for that higher place you envisaged. Keep on making the present bigger and better. It is the secret of higher level. When you transit to the next level, take time to celebrate the Almighty God. He will take you to get a higher level.
REFLECTION: Life is in phases and men are in sizes.
