THE NEED FOR ENTERPRISE
Merriam-Webster defines enterprise as a “readiness to engage in daring or difficult action”. This is what we will be looking at. You may have heard someone described as enterprising. All they are referring to is that the person so described is hard-working, committed, enthusiastic and visionary. Now, there is a difference between the regular enterprise (business organization, job, trade etc) and character enterprise.
For an individual to be described as enterprising, he must show certain traits. As already mentioned above, he must be diligent. Without hard work, dreams will remain in the realm of dreams. You must know that nothing gets done in your life until you do it yourself.
And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the Lord, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou. 1Kings20:13-14
The battles in your life that will deliver what God had “delivered” into your hand will have to be ordered by you. I repeat, if you don’t do it, none will do it. The first rule here is that of responsibility. You are responsible for either your success or otherwise. As it has been said over and over again, success is the cumulative effect of well-managed destiny. In the same vein, failure is the cumulative effect of a mismanaged destiny. Once you realize that you are the architect of either your fortune or misfortune, it behoves on you to stand up and do something. Don’t just sit down and watch your destiny tick away with the clock. What exactly do you want from life? Life will not deliver into your hand what you desire but what you deserve. It is what your enterprise skills are worth that life would deliver into your hands.
There is hardly anything worth the while in life that does not come with its own set of challenges. Yes. Nothing good comes easy. You must be prepared to face challenges. Take up daunting and difficult tasks on your way of destiny. The more difficult tasks you undertake and overcome, the more your ability to surmount obstacles and mount up with strengthened wings to soar higher and higher.
An average enterprising individual also exhibits a measure of self-discipline. They create worthwhile values and live by them. You need to work by principles and values that say, “others may, but I dare not”! You can’t sleep the way others sleep; watch television like they do; engage in frivolities like them and expect to tower above them in life. Hear what a disciplined and principled politician once said as his guiding light.
“While many men in power and public office are busy carousing in the midst of women of easy virtue and men of low morals, I, as a few others like me, am busy at my desk thinking about the problems of Nigeria and proffering solutions to them”. Obafemi Awolowo.
