THE POWER OF THE HOLY COMMUNION

Matthew 26:27–28

The Holy Communion is a powerful gift that God has given us. The Communion is more than just a symbol of Jesus’ body and blood. The account of the last supper introduced a new dimension to feasting at the Lord’s Table. It brings us into unification with Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “This is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.” We become partakers of his death and resurrection.

In the Old Testament, the shadow of the Communion was the Passover Lamb eaten on the eve of the deliverance of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt. On the night of the Passover in Exodus 12, God told the children of Israel to take a lamb for every household and apply the blood on the doorposts of their homes. While the Israelites ate the lamb, judgment was declared outside their houses. The angel of death went around killing the firstborn child of everyone who did not have the blood of the lamb on their doorposts.

You don’t need to have “great faith” to partake of the Communion. What God requires is your hunger and obedience. Even if some Israelites didn’t have faith, even if they were crying and afraid in their homes, as long as the blood of the lamb was on their doorpost, they were saved. Their safety was in obedience to instruction on the blood. Jesus died for you. His blood has been shed for the remission of your sins. Partake worthily of the Communion by being conscious of this truth. Let your obedience to the tenets of the communion be total. Do not partake of it unworthily. Reverence the table of the Lord and trust Him to perfect all that concerns you.

MEDITATION: “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:14)
